I was plowing with my 730lp yesterday, when I smelled oil, looked behind me and there was oil spraying on the chisel polw.It had blown the gasket on the right side where the pto adjustment cover is, I did have the pto gear engaged.but had the clutch in the disengage position, Why would it build up so much pressure to blow out like this? thanks Ben..

Ben, on my 620, the PTO clutch reservoir had tranny fluid in it which leaked through that inner pump seal and I wanted to change and refill it and go on. However, Henry informed me the pump seal was leaking and we should replace it. I said fine, no problem lets do that. THEN he told me we had to pull the entire rear housing out which almost put me in cardiac arrest cuz thats a *&^%$ of a job. We ended up doing it and replaced the seal and I went ahead and installed a whole new set of PTO clutches (some were down to metal) which wanst cheap or easy BUTTTTT TTT now shes fine and no slips and the PTO level stays the same with no tranny fluid YAYYYYY YYYYY. Check the condition and smell and color of ur PTO fluid and let us know how you fix it. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff

Ben, that is a strange occurrence. The first thing that comes to mind is a plugged vent [where ever that is]. I have probably been into over 50 of those later PTO clutches & can't say I remember seeing a vent. It must vent somewhere though [probably high in the unit].
~If the heated expanded air can't get out it will build pressure.
~The next thing that comes to mind is there was water in the PTO unit causing problems
~The next thing that comes to mind is the front PTO pump seal is leaking & trans oil is being pumped into the PTO assembly [does the PTO oil smell like gear lube?] If trans fluid is entering the PTO it will ruin the PTO clutches & there is a good chance the clutches are running metal to metal & making lots of heat [even when released]. Or the PTO unit completely filled with trans gear oil & built up hydraulic pressure to pop that gasket.
~The PTO comes apart pretty easy & you should probably take a look inside to see if there is anything apparent that caused the problem. If there is gear oil in the PTO you will have to pull the whole rear housing to replace the pump seal [that's a pretty good job]
~When [or if] you find the problem let us know as that is a unique problem..... .

Thanks John and clooney..I will check it out tommorrow after work, If the tran is leaking fluid into the pto housing it should be leakink out the blown gasket..I hope it is not the seal, I am not set up in my shop for that kind of a job. The oil smell and looked like the 30# that i put in the pto. I run 140# in the transmission. I can't stop the tractor now I have about 70ac of costal grass to chisel, and my 720 is not ready yet.(slow project). once again thanks..

Ben, youre welcome and I forget now if I used Auto Tranny Fluid or General Purpose Hydraulic Oil or Power Steering Fluid in my PTO, but I sure didnt use regualr oil which can cause a foaming problem. Good luck, Ol John T

Deere called for 10 weight MOTOR oil in those pto/s. Never had any foaming.

Yep, I have used straight 10W in some hydraulic aplications also, but would be afraid of 30W as he mentioned he's runing it may foam on him. John T

Ben, if you just disengage the main PTO lever by the trans shifter you can run it for ever without any problems [until you need the PTO again]....

I turn it off after it happen. I am going to change the oil to a lighter grade also, I have 30# in my 50 and never had a problem, I will have to look at the tech manual to see if,or how it vents. Thanks again guys,,Ben
