I'm going to look at a JD A tommrow and was wandering what to look for in knowing if it is for me. I got married in June and the wifes family has always had JD so I'm looking to buy one for her to play with. I found this JD in the paper and the guy was in the middle of restoring and got hurt. He says it is a '44 model. What are some things I should check out on the motor or transmission. He is asking $600. He says it runs fine but after ending up in the hospital for 10 days he doesn't have the willpower to finish painting it. He got thrown by a drill when drilling out a hole on the frame. Thanks for any info.

Mike, You would look at the same things as you would on a Farmall. Tin, radiator, manifold ECT. You didn,t say if it's running NOW, or runs when it's together. Hard to look for problems when it can't be started. However the price sounds very fair. The A is not easy to steer. Your wife may do better on a B or H. Oh well, get the A and if its to much for her you have an excuse to look for a H or B.

Thanks for the info, yes the tractor runs and has had new hoses, plugs, and has a new belt. He said when he started working on it he droped the pan and checked things out and cleaned it up while it was off. My thought is if it ran fine to begin with why take the pan off. Anyway I'm going to look at it this afternoon and will let you know how I turn out. The wife don't know I'm looking yet, so if I get it I better plug the heater in to warm up the machine shed for tonight!!

I'd buy it at the price no matter what! Other wise if it does not have any major fluid leaks, does not have a lot of blue smoke or throw oil out the exhaust, transmission stays in all gears, usual stuff.
