Need help with Duplex carb on a 60

I've got a miss on #2 cylinder that I can't seem to adjust out with the idle adjusting screw. Tried shorting out #1 and adjusting #2 idle, then repeating process for #1 cylinder (as per service manual) but still there. I have not yet "fiddled with" metering screw.
Top end of motor was completely rebuilt about 500 hours ago. I have installed new points, condensor, plugs (AC C88L's), plug and coil wires and coil.
I'm not a carb specialist by any means so any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Al in Iowa

Al, if your problem is at idle it isn't the metering screw.
~Does the idle adjusting screw for the #2 cylinder have any effect on the idle quality? If not, or it has less effect than the carb L/H idle screw, the carb idle circuit is probably the problem.
~If you can change the idle, but just cant get it right, more than likely you have other problems like worn carb throttle plate, worn throttle shaft bushings/or shaft, low compression, leaking valve guide, faulty spark plug, worn distributor points cam, manifold problem or other reason it wont fire the R/H cylinder consistently at idle.
~Start with a new set of spark plugs set at .040 or at least swap the old ones side to side to see if that helps. Then maybe try a new plug wire on the offending side. If no help there do a hot compression test, valve adjustment & check the valve guides for excess play.
~Look the carb over for worn throttle plates, loose throttle shaft bushings & a worn throttle shaft, or a bent throttle shaft. [if the carb has different sealing or worn throttle plates it will never idle correctly]. You might want to pull the carb & hold it up to a light source to see if the ring of light around the throttle plates looks the same on both sides [if not start there].
~One other thing to check is that the manifold heat control valve is set to EXACTLY hot or cold & not turned a little. [if it is not exactly on hot or cold it could let exhaust gas into the intake manifold causing poor running & a lousy idle]

Thanks for your help (again), Clooney!
I had the JD tech come out on Friday and he found that my points were set to nearly .030; after re-gapping to .022 she purrs like a kitten!
I noticed that you suggested I gap the plugs to .040; my manual says to gap to .030. Will going to a larger gap boost performance/longevity of the C88-L's I run?
Thanks again!

Al, no, going to a larger plug gap won't boost performance. In a lot of cases it will improve the idle quality though. If you are happy with the idle using .030" gap then there is no reason to try .040"..

Al, sounds like you definitely need a carb rebuild. Your idle passages are stopped up, reason for miss no fuel a low speed. It is not simple to rebuild the duplex as they used steel balls to seal the drill passages. If you want to pay for a good job, I'd recommend sending it to Robert's carburators in Spencer.
