I've got a '64 JD 4020 ps Last summer it started giving trouble shifting from 7 to 8 when throttled up. Acted like clutch was slipping. Throttled him back and it shifted nice with no slip. Now it does the same as low as 4th to 5th. Has a small oil leak underneath between the block and trans housing. JD dealer says ps needs overhaul. A fellow told me the crankshaft seal is leaking which is getting the clutch wet. I've owned the tractor since 2000hrs(10,500 now) and have never been abusive to the tranny. Any thoughts out there?

If it's slipping like that in all the gears, it could be the disconnect clutch slipping. You could check trans pressure to make sure it is up to snuff. If it's slipping in normal conditions in 4th and 5th, put it in 3rd and ride the brakes and see if it will slip in that gear, too. If all of this points toward the disconnect clutch, the tractor has to be split to repair it, and while you're there, I would also recommend pulling the clutch pack to disassemble and inspect it. You'll never be any closer to it, and it would be a shame to have to split the tractor twice, especially with that kind of hours on it.

Since the 4020 with powershift reeally has no clutch much less a dry one the engine seal leaking would have no effect. I would change hydraulic filters first. If that doesn't help you might want to get hydraulic pressure checked. If taht is ok then it may be in powershift transmission. I worked on this series of tractor for a number of years and very seldomly had any trouble with ps tranny.

That tractor does have a dry clutch disk in front of the trans input shaft and clutch pack. The clutch in those is a disconnect type that can be released to aid in cold starting by removing the load of the transmission from the engine crankshaft. Even the 30 and 40 series powershift tractors have a torsional damper disk that is spring applied, although it can't be released like it can on the 10 and 20 series units. An oil leak at either the front of the trans or the rear of the engine will make those disks slip. If the tranny wants to slip in all gears, that's the most likely culprit.
