I have an old (1972) JD820 three cyl diesel tractor that starts and runs great when it is warm. Now that winter is here I have a hard time getting it to start. Is there a block heater that I could install to help with cold starting?

All of the info menchined is good advice. I have started my 4010D at -35 F. I can tell you that nothing works better than HEAT of the BTU kind, not the kind that comes in a can. Up here I have a tank heater, a battery wormer, and I will heat the eng. oil with a weed burner through a 6 foot lenght of 4 in. stove pipe when I need her in weather that is 0 or colder. I NEVER try to start her in cold weather with out a good worn up before I try the starter.

good luck

A block heater eases starting and reduces engine wear. Worn dribbling injectors don't break the fuel into a fine spray making it more difficuilt to ignite. Install the highest CCA HD vibration resistant battery that will fit the battery box. Measure for voltage drop across all electrical connections in the starter circuit. Dropping from 12 to 9 volts cuts the cranking power in half. A battery warmer keeps the battery warm for more cranking amps and faster charging. Is the charging voltage 13.8 to 14.4 volts in cold weather? Use synthetic 15W40 Amsoil crankcase lube.

Pete, while a block heater is a big help as well as good compression & clean injectors, one of the leading causes of a healthy diesel not starting in cold weather is slow cranking due to a low battery power or improper sized battery(s). Try using a battery charger overnight & use the starting boost [if you have it] while cranking to see if your problem is just slow cranking. As a rule the faster a diesel engine turns while cranking the easier it starts...

I forgot to ask another question about starting. Do I give the engine a lot of fuel at startup or do I just crack the throttle. Can you flood a diesel enging like a gasoline engine since there is no spark to ignite the fuel?

give it a snort of ether or install a block heater. a little ether doesn't hurt anything.
