I have finnished rebuilding a three brush generator for a '52 B. The lugs on regulator that I bought are marked " F", "BATT" , "L". The feild and Battery lugs are no problem. I need to know if I should connect the "A" lead from the generator ( thrid brush ) to the "L" terminal on the regulator. Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Dave, if your regulator has [F], [BAT] & [L], it must have an unmarked wire emerging from the bottom of the regulator, that wire will be the [ARM] & will hook to the [A] post on the generator {larger of the two}, the [F] on the regulator will hook to [F] on the generator & the [L] on the regulator will hook to the light switch feed with a jumper to the ignition switch feed, & obviously the [BAT] will hook to the battery wire from the non battery side of the ammeter.... When everything is installed, be sure to momentarily jump the [BAT] terminal on the regulator to the [A] post on the generator to polarize the generator.
~If your regulator only has 3 terminals & doesn't have that lower 4th wire, take another closer look at the regulator terminal markings as one of the 3 probably is marked [A], [ARM] or [GEN].....

Look under the bottom of the regulator for a fourth connection.

Dave, on many of those type Voltage Regulators Ive seen, the wire out of the VR that goes to the Armature post on the Generator (marked ARM and bigger of the 2 generator posts, other smaller one being Field) comes out the bottom of the VR and is NOT one of the regular on top screw down attachment posts. The L terminal out the VR is what feeds loads like ignition, lights etc. IT DOESNT HOOK TO ARMATURE ON THE GENERATOR. The older Voltage Regulators (I call 3 wire) had 3 terminals being Field, GEN (or ARM) and Battery. On those systems, all loads like ignition and lights plus the BAT on the VR hooked to the load (non battery) side of the ammeter. On the newer Voltage Regulators, (what I call 4 wire), the only lead that gets to the ammeter load side (or the battery) is the BAT off the VR, while the L (load) terminal then feeds the ignition and lights etc., often via the ignition switch. So, the VR you have can probably be used, but I bet it has the lead thats supposed to feed the Generators Armature out the bottom. Its BAT terminal has to get to the battery, of course, to charge it, and thats via an ammeter if it has one, or else direct to the battery often via the starter post. Likewise, the ignition and switches and lights need battery power, and thats fed off the LOAD terminal on the new VR. The Generator has to connect its armature output to charge the battery, and that has to go through the VR's cutout relay, so it has to be connected to the VR somewhere. My last G used a 3 brush generator and a 3 wire VR, but that 4 wire you have can be used also if wired as explained above. Some 3 brush generators used light switch field current regulators and simple 2 wire cut out relays. Clear as Mud??? Post back any questions. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana
