Last fall I stopped at a "Giant Tool Sale" by the Homier (not sure of spelling) company. Outside were some pretty red tractors and I learned that they were importing a Chinese tractor and putting their name on the hood. They weren't bad looking, except the castings were rough like the Russian tractors when they started importing them, and the price was cheap, as I recall, a 22 hp was 3800 or 4000 and a 30 hp with 4-wheel drive was 6500. As I listened to the sales pitch the salesman said " and they're made by the same company that makes the small John Deere" and pointed to the letters "JD" cast on the side of block. After he moved aside I mosied over and looked at the company name tag and saw that the company name was "Jong Dong", pronounced Wong Dong. It was a JD but not a John Deere.

The Chinese make the Mannheim 3140 under license with old JD tooling.

I would run from those tractors as fast as I could. A local business man started importing chinese tractors and they really sold for awhile. As they started being used they began to have problems. Parts took months to get if they could get them at all and repairs were costing more than the tractors originally. This particular fellow had many lawsuits against him and ended up leaving the tractor business and going back to the car business. That old saying of you get what you pay for really applys here.

Don't know if it's true or not, but I heard that years ago Japan renamed one of their heavy manufacturing cities "USA" so they could legally put "Made in USA" on anything built their.

Bob,

Yep, I heard the same thing back in the late '40s or early '50s. Probably true back then, because there sure was a lot of anti-Japanese sentiment.

Hiya Stan,

On the flip side of that, I know a Japanese trading company that has been importing Taiwanese and Korean electronic components - sticking Made in Japan labels on them - and selling them for about 30 per cent more. It's been a good business for them for about 20 years now.

Delco in Anderson laid off around 400 people last week. The news was their average wage was $45/hr. When you add taxes and benies they must have cost ~80 an hour. Brings this whole argument home quickly when you contemplate spending 500 to 800 bucks for a new starter or alternator for your tractor. I'm thankful I don't live in Madison county, as they'll need even more money now to teach kids to fail basic reading tests - but know the state will be looking to take up the slack as they've developed a voracious appetite for money. Stay in Florida and remember that Abe Lincoln taught himself to read by the light of the hearth.

Sounds like the result of the "improving our trade deficit" initiative by the previous presidential adminasstration. Sort off the "wu fand chang" version of NAFTA. More "globalization" mite be the applicable term also.

Hopefully John Deere gets wind of this and makes them grind the letters off. TOO bad we can't shut down all this China stuff
and get jobs back in the USA. Forget North Korea
forget Iraq and Saddam lets take care of our people first.

John Deere "is" building tractors in China. I'm at my friends puter, so i can't put the link up here. They are bigger tractors NOT compacts. JD also has a lot of their replacement parts made in china, so i guess you guys will have to get use to it! Robert

So what you are saying is that we should fundamentally change the American way of life. We should each be able to force our employer to pay us as much as we would like to earn, but then we could no longer spend that money as we choose. The idea of getting the best value for a dollar spent would go out the window and the government would only let us select things that had American labels on them. The problem with that is one tiny little issue that we Americans have which is called f-r-e-e-d-o-m of choice.

When you do this Mike make sure you remember the American farmer because he cannot compete in a world market, if he pays American union wages.

Paul; I'm all for shutting off the oil and switching to ethanol I think this would help crop prices the most. If this was done in the 70's it would be the norm now with stations on every corner.

I wasn't thinking of it that way, but you are right. The Amish of today or our grandparents 60 plus years ago. We can't point out any particular group in the labor force and blame them for our problems. The Union work force represents a small small fraction of the workers in this country. Our standard of living is envied by many countys in the world, some are trying to buy it,[Japs] and others want to kill us because of it[ Quess Who]

SO...DON"T pay anything above minimum wage and work 'em like dogs? So we can compete with the imports? How about tariffs on products made by slave labor in totalitarian countries? OR...JUST SAY NO! to buying ANYTHING but American UNION MADE products! Look at the Japanese farmers...their UNION is so strong that they have kept the price of beef at a level that excludes the viability of imports....Come on, people...GET A GRIP!

It really amazes me of how some peoples opinion of Unions can be SO distorted. How quickly many forget about child labor,no worker's rights, unfair wages, and unfair labor practices. Maybe I live in a different world but I am proud of what my forefathers fought and died for so I can be treated fairly and provide my family a decent income.
