HA, problems like yours are notoriously hard to diagnose over the internet. You said your tractor was open station, so it's got a different steering system than I normally work with. I've had the steering colum assembly apart on a 2940, which I think is similar, but that was several years ago. You could have a problem in the steering column itself, or in the steering cylinder. I would start with the steering cylinder and make sure the cylinder packings are good and it is not bypassing oil from one side to the other. That would be the easiest place to start. However, since you mentioned that the wheels turn themselves, I also wouldn't rule out a problem in the steering metering unit. See how the diagnostic process can start to get complicated? If you're going to tackle this yourself, I would suggest buying or borrowing a service manual for your tractor. It should have some good troubleshooting info and the proper testing and repair techniques. To suggest doing anything else at this point would be a shot in the dark, and I doubt you just want to start replacing parts until you find what it is.
