Cyclone refers to the two-cylinder cylinder heads that have an "eyebrow" positioned in the combustion chamber by the intake valve. This eyebrow induced a swirl effect in the air/fuel mixture entering the combustion chamber to keep the fuel in suspension better and allow for a better and more complete fuel burn to produce more power and better efficiency. This was a factory Deere head, and I believe they were introduced at the time the styled tractors were, but I could be wrong on that part.

G-MAN,

They were introduced with the "late styled" A (S/M 584000)and B (S/N 201000) tractors. I don't know if they were continued into the numbered series or not, but if they were, they were not advertised as such by that time. I think the combustion, compression, and everything else was improved greatly with the early numbered tractors.

Good call. Didn't all the GMs and styled "G"s have the cyclone head? The serial number break at the beginning of GM production shows the F550 head being used from then on. Late "A"s and "B"s are considered what year, '47? I do think the number series tractors continued to use a similar head, at least as far as combustion chamber design goes. Obviously the two-barrel carbureted heads would be considerably different in other areas, but I believe they still had an eyebrow.

G-MAN,

I tried to e-mail you a scan from an old sales brochure of cyclone engine info. Came back as undeliverable.

If you're interested, please answer me by e-mail so I can verify your address.

G-MAN,

The GM and Styled G's may have had that feature, but I never heard of it until the late styled A and B tractors came out. None of the old sales brochures I have mention the G having "cyclonic" fuel intake, but who knows? Both the late styled A and B did indeed come out in the '47 model year, but not at the normal year model change time - in approximately March, though. That means there are '47 A's and B's that do not have the pressed steel frames, square seats, etc. We did get our '41 B converted to the "cyclone" engine when they came out, and moved up from a 1-16" plow to a 2-12" plow.
