How do you measure the backlash in the fanshaft and gov. shaft gears. I have a new set to be installed to complete my governer overhaul.

Nathaniel, to properly measure the backlash the heel [backs of the gears] must be even, then mount a dial indicator with the plunger at a right angle to the gear teeth & out near the outer circumference of the gear [I usually use the bevel gear on the governor shaft] & adjust the fan bearing & governor cover gasket thickness give .004"-.006" gear movement. Make sure to keep the heels even when adding shims to one end or the other.....
