Got a book that says that the 720 series offered entirely new engines over the 70's, except for the 720 Diesel. What does this author mean? Do the 720 D's have the exact same engine as the 70D? Or are some parts different?

The book is: JOHN DEERE TWO CYLINDER TRACTORS BY ROBERT PRIPPS.

Thanks, Les

As other have listed basically the same engine... Different bowls on the pistons.. but most have been changed to the later bowls style.. the later ones had different pumps and injectors.. 10mm pumps in the 70D.. 13mm in the 720s.. Also a change in the injectors tips.. I don't remember when the change came on the head.. but I believe it was in the 720's.. I know the 730s had a better designed head than the 70D.

Also wondering about the 720D and 70D flywheels. Would they interchange?

Les, the early 720D [under 7214899] should interchange with the 70D [unless the later parts were installed on an early 720D. The 70D & early 720D used the F-1933R flywheel. I haven't ever tried to use the later flywheel on an early tractor so can't say whether it can be made to work or not....

Les, the late 70D & early 720D were about the same engine & used most of the same parts. As the 720D progressed it kept getting improvements & became slightly different than the 70D..... ...

from what I remember, the heads & injectors were different, and I think the later 720's may have had piston heads that were shaped differently, but I'm not sure on that one.. I'm sure you'll get more accurate comments later on..
