I am picking up my first diesel tractor tomorrow and have a few basic questions. It is a newer used JD 3cyl diesel. Having never owned anything diesel before, is there anything I need to know. Such as changing oils, any additives I should add to the gas, etc.. I live where it gets COLD in the winter. Thanks in advance!
Jerry

Get the manuals for your tractor and read themthey are your bible. And use nothing but John Deere oil. Jon

Jerry:

First off, start calling it diesel fuel, and not gas. Or some teeny bopper at the local pump will sell you K-1 or gasline instead.

Some folks use an additive like Silo, etc. There are many out there that alter the waxing forming point in the fuel.

Any good motor oil rated for diesel service will work well for you. I have an 855, and since it is now well broken in, I elected to use synthetic oil in it. Depending on your anticipatd annual usege, you might only need to change it once or twice a year.

If you need to start it during extremely cold temperatures, you might want to install a coolant heater. My 855 will start down to 20* just fine, and I haven't had a chance (knock on wood) to try at even lower temps because that's as cold as we get here in N. Fla. If I were to move back to the Midwest, I'd put a block or hose heater in it. If you can park it inside, so much the better.

Fuel filters are just as important as the engine oil filter, so service them properly on schedule.

Buy an operators manual right away....800-522-7448. A service manual is handy if you think you'll be doing any heavier maintenance or repairs.

Keep the battery posts clean, because she'll need every amp she can muster on a cold day. You could also use a trickle charger (1 amp or so) to keep the battery(ies) up and just a bit warm. If you use a trickle charger, check the water level in the battery often.

Replace your coolant regularly. The old stuff rots rubber and digests collant system parts. It's cheap insurance.

Hope you have good luck !

If its newer chances are it will have electric (plug into the wall) block heater and or glow plugs (12 volt) to assist in cold weather starts. I live in Michigan and dont have problems with Diesel fuel geling unless the temps get in the low 20s or colder. but you can buy anti-gel additives for your diesel fuel if you plan to run it in cold conditions. As far as the oil I would run whatever the manual calls for.
