I've had this 630 for many years and occasionally I will have problems getting the low gears and reverse to work. The lever reaches the proper postion but the tractor doesn't move when the clutch is engaged. Moving the shift lever to other gears will always cause the other gears to work but its a nuisance and I would like to adjust it if possible.

Jay, the usual problem with the 630 trans when it acts like you are saying is the under/over drive sliding gear is not engaging completely when moving the shift lever from one side of the gate to the other [does it always seem to act up after the shift lever is moved from one side of the quadrant to the other?]. Sometimes just adjusting the shift rails will help, in other cases it is caused by worn shift forks, worn shift fork slots, bent shift fork, worn shift lever pivot or bottom ball, worn sliding gear shaft bearings, worn input shaft bearing(s), sliding gear wear, countershaft bearing wear, or more than likely some wear on all the parts mentioned above. ~Sometimes just making sure the pulley is slowly spinning during the shift will eliminate [or at least help eliminate] the false neutral problem. About all you can do is pull the trans top cover & check all the parts & bearings for excess wear & repair anything found loose or wrong, then adjust the shifter parts to line up & shift correctly.....

Thanks for the tips you guys. Somewhere back a few years someone told me there was a set screw under the flywheel cover. By loosening the lock nut and turning the screw it might help solve this problem. But no one said which way to turn the screw so in my timid fashion I simply struggled with the problem. My manuals don't address this in a way I can understand. Your advice is much more useful. thanks again. By the way temps here were in the 50s yesterday so I played with the toys. By monday highs may not reach zero. I'll stay inside...jay

If you adjust the rails without taking the top off you are doing it blind, by feel. There are two that are adjustable from under the flywheel cover. The rear rail is not and is the one you set the other ones to. Loosen the bolts just enough so you can turn the screws. Then, while holding down on the detent spring for the rear rail to keep it in position, adjust the other two so the gates line up with the rear one. Tighten the lock bolts, double check the alignment and if ok put it back together. While you have the cover off it would make sense to check the fulcrum ball and socket and repair as needed, nothing too costly there unless the stick is bad. Good luck.

That is an adjustment problem or you can live with it. When you shift from high range to low you come around to fast and you do not get in the detent. The other thing could be is a loose shift lever there are 4 bolts under shifter houseing they I think are loose. Make sure you feel it fall into detent when you shift.

after several decades of wear, generally there is no simple adjustment to solve this. The transmission probably needs to be dissasembled and new bearing installed where needed, reshimmed to take up the many years of wear. If you gears are good the rest is taking out the movement in the upper shaft and the lower countershaft...then adjusting your rails for proper alignment. If I planned on keeping and using tractor this would be my recommendation.
