I was replacing the fan belts on the 6030 yesterday and found that when I unbolted the coupler between the crank pulley and the hydraulic pump I found that I can only just move the pump by hand (very hard to turn). Is this normal ? The temp was 29f so maybe the oil was like treacle. This must use a few hp when starting the engine ? Thanks.

When cold or if your batteries are getting low, turn the steering wheel while while starting and it and it will roll over a little easier. Just from experience from our 2510,3020,4320 and 6030. I'm sure many people who own these tractors will agree. Oh and your hydraulic pump is fine.

That's normal, and yes- it does take some power to turn it while starting. It usually isn't neccesary, but John Deere does make a kit to electrically destroke that pump so it's easier to turn while cranking.
