I was just wondering where it starts?
1946 B John Deere Some say serial number 179788 through 191302 is a 1946 model ?????

There's a lot of controversy over the numbering scheme. Here's what I've found over the years regarding the 1946 Model B:

"Brown book" (published by Deere in 1976) says the '46 models started at 183673.

"Gray book" (published by Deere in 1994 with numerous corrections to the "brown book") says that 179788 was the first '46 model.

The John Deere Data Book seems to have taken information from both the "brown book" and the "gray book", but in most cases, seems to use the incorrect info from the "brown book".

199743, based on the "brown book" and info from Green Magazine, was the last '46 model. The '47s, from 199744 to 200099, looked just like the '46s, and the late styled versions started at 201000.

It would be interesting to see if anyone has data from Two Cylinder to see what they say.

Well, there sure are a lot of differing opinions, aren't there? I suspect this is one of those issues that can never be solved on this board, don't you?

Keith, The John Deere Data Book, by Dunning, lists a 46 B as serial#s 183673 to 199743. BR's and BO's are different.

What some books say is wrong. See, Deere did the same thing that car makers do. New 1946 B's could be bought in July of 1945. But some serial number books are saying that it is a 1945. They are taking the serial numbers from January to December. That is wrong. The serial number range for 1946 B is 179788-191302 like you stated. I think it was 1948 that Deere moved the beginning of the model year to like September? I'm not real sure.

I know that this site is wrong.

In "The John Deere Styled Letter Series" by JR Hobbs, he gives 179788 to 190677 for 1946. Even he can make mistakes but he seems to be the most accurate of the John Deere gurus.
