A friend of mine has a '41 A that he restored last summer. He says the paint is starting to "bubble" on the engine. I haven't seen it yet but I think he means the block. He was wondering if there is a high temperature paint he can use to resist bubbling, or if he can add something to the paint he is using to help resist heat. I think he is using Classic Green but am not sure. Any advice?

Thanks! Fireman

JUST A THOUGHT BUT IF THE SEDAMENT BOWL IS LEAKING EVER SO SLOWLEY IT CAN CAUSE THE PAINT TO BUBBLE. BETTER YET IF THE BLOCK WASN'T RINSED OFF FROM THE BOILING PROCESS THERE IS MAY BE ENOUGH ACID LEFT TO DO IT. HOPE THIS HELPS DON

i saw a 50 that was painted and it bubbled on the block....the reason it did that was because water was leaking from a crack under the paint.....he might want to check for that too.

He had his block checked at a machine shop. I'll tell him to take a look to double check.

Sounds more like a preparation problem to me. I have painted several with just spray cans and have never had any bubble unless possibly it was on the manifold?

He had his block done at a machine shop where it was cleaned, probably in a hot tank, and then machined. I don't know if he did anything to it before painting, other than priming. He sys the rest of the tractor is OK so I don't think it is a problem with incompatible primer.

Thanks! Fireman

Ok, sounds good but how long did it sit with the primer on it before painted? Primer is only good for about 30 days without being painted. This I picked up while working at the Paint department at Lowes.

I'm not sure, not long because he left the block and head in the machine shop plastic until installation, then painted within a week or 2 of installation.

He told me last night that the paint took a long time to "cure" and that he thought he may have operated the tractor before the paint had fully cured. He thinks that had something to do with it, sounds logical to me. Thanks for your help!
