I'm am going to look at a 69 5020 w/new 6030 engine and was wondering what you guys think it is worth? It has factory roll-gard cab, 20.8x38 tires appx 60%, 11.00x16 fronts at appx 20%, 3-point, dual outlets, good glass in cab. thanks

Which 6030 engine does it have in it? 6030s were available with either the naturally-aspirated 6531 or the turbocharged and aftercooled version of the same engine. Both were rated at 175 horsepower, if I remember correctly. The turboed engine is going to be easier to build for performance, if that's the route you want to take. Either engine should make a real animal out of the 5020, as a 6030 was basically just an uprated 5020 anyway. Very tough old tractors.

Actually, the naturally aspirated 6-531 they put in the 6030s was rated at 141hp...exactly 10 more hp than the 5020. The 6030s with the turbo 6-531 (we own two of them) were rated at 175hp but most put out about 225hp...stock! Both of ours have dynoed in the 225-235hp range and they are bone stock.

You might be right on the horsepower difference, although it seems silly of Deere to offer the same model at two different HP ratings. We had a 6030 operator's manual around here, but I can't seem to find it now. You're also correct about your tractors dynoing higher than stock horsepower. That's pretty common even on stock Deere's. I usually regard PTO horsepower ratings as a bare minimum that the tractor should have rather than a true indication of power output. It's not uncommon to see even "worn-out" tractors with 7500 engine hours still well in excess of rated HP with factory pump seals still in place. Deere power at work.

I never understood that strategy myself G-Man. I think that is the only instance of the same tractor from Deere (New Generation to present) having two engine choices. I think it was a fuel economy thing if Im not mistaken.

According to the GM the sales of the 5020 dropped like a rock during the last 2 years of production. So maybe JD was trying to use up the remaing inventory of the naturally aspirated 531 engines. Just a thought

Around here you can get a good 6030 for the same or less price of a 4020.
