Hoping some of the experts here can help me out. This is a photo of my father and what I recall him saying was `37 model A. 1st saw this photo when I was 9 or 10(that was MANY years ago). I have been on the hunt for one of these tractors since I re-discovered this photo in the beginning of December. Want to make sure that what I need to be looking for is a 37 A.
Also, can a one still get tires like those?

Thanks in advance!

Scott: BTW, It does have the shifting box like in your fathers photo. If you would like, I can take more pictures at different angles and email them to you direct.

Hi Scott
The tractor in the photo is an unstyled G. The G's came out with that shifting setup from the beginning, and stayed that way till the end uf 1941 production. At that time G's went to the two gearshift setup. The A's and B's never had a single lever setup till later in production.

Looking at the picture. It is positively a unstyled G. The G came out in 1938. In unstyled form, it was made up to 1942. The A and B were styled in 1939. I know that the 39 A and B got a round spoked steering wheel for 1939. All unstyled A's and B's had a flat spoked steering wheel. If you look at the photo, you will see that the steering wheel is round spoked. I don't know if the round spoked steering wheel was put on the unstlyed G in 1939 when the A and B got it. If so, your unstyled G is a 1939-1942. Hope someone else can help more.

While the person is dressed for cold weather I don't see any ice or snow around that requies chains for traction? That steering shaft appears to be going over the rad and the air intake stack is infront, not beside the muffler.

Althought I now live in TN, my family came from North Dakota, close to the Canadian border. I beleive that this photo was taken in the early spring; hence the cool weather clothes.

Your ancestors were sensible to move to a warmer climate. I'm getting tired of being one of the frozen chosen who live in weeks of winter night, chasing polar bears and chewing on seal blubber.

Scott,

The suggestion about Miller Tire is a good one. Those tires are Firestones, as the "closed tread" design shows. Firestone changed their tread to a curved bar, but still with a "closed tread" in the late '40s. Goodyear and others had a tread design in which the bars did not join each other in the middle and were straight - called "open tread" by Goodyear. Goodyear touted them as being more "self-cleaning" and said they did not gather mud as much as the closed tread design.

I am pretty sure that it is a G and for the tires I think you can get them but have a tight grip on your wallet as they will be pricey compared to ordinary tires, and the same goes for the G. The price difference between the G and A is usually several hundred dollars. Not sure where you are in Tennessee but I am in central Tennessee and am currently restoring a 1937 A and would be glad to let you look at it before you buy. Good Luck.

From what I can make out it looks like a G the shifter show a quadrant. The G was the only unstyled that the single shifter.

I agree I would say its a G with the shift box, round spoke steering wheel, cast rear centers. I'm no expert by any means but I'd say probably its more like a 40-41 model G ?

1st, let me thank you and the others for the replies!
If you think it would help, I can zoom in on any part (photo scanned at high res), crop it out and email to you.

It looks like it only has one gear shifter, i have a 36 it has two shifters and spoke rear and front wheels so most be newer than a 36. Maybe someone knows when they started making one shifter. Sorry i don't know more, Ken.

Scott, I am no help on the tractor, but I think you can still get that tread design on the tires, maybe Miller Tire has them. Try www.millertire.com I bought some for an L a few years back from my local dealer. The tread design was the same.
