We have a 4020 in our shop with a mechanical front wheel drive. We are trying to identify it. Does anybody know who made these MFWD units? Are they still in business? Any parts available for them? Thanks for any help.

Referring to these factory installed front wheel assist tractors as MFWD is not really correct. The reason being they are not mechanically driven. The "factory" installed option on these older tractors were strictly hydraulically driven. The correct term for them was FWA (Front Wheel Assist). The word "Assist" did mean just that. The front drive alone on these tractor would barely pull the weight of the tractor. On Powershift models you could disconnect the rear wheels with the tow disconnect feature and see just how limited the drive systems were. Just a little more information to help clarify what this option was and there true ability of this option was. Dave W.

I don't know anything about them, but I do know there were some put out by John Deere factory. I have a JD History book that has a 4620 mfwd that I am sure was factory built.

Also, there is a FINE looking 4020 mfwd for sale on Ebay, for about $20k. Would love to have it, but that seems a little steep.

I saw one of these mechanical front wheel assist outfits at the expo at waterloo this past summer, was in the swap meet area& was for sale. Don't know who made it, but looked like they split the tractor just behind the bellhousing, added a 3-4" section,& apparently drew power from the front end of the lower trans shaft. This lengthened the wheelbase by the length of the spacer. Don't know anything about how well they worked, but it appeared to be a fairly well engineered unit.

The 4020 has power front wheel drive, it is a fluid drive, choppers and combines had the same unit installed on the rear axle, the main hydralic pump ran the motors the wheels were mounted on. Though there could be some aftermarket addon kits. The Deere unit was factory installed not an addon. chris

The front wheel drive unit was offered by deere on the 4020. According to a book I have the 4020 was the first tractor to be offered with MFWD as an option. I have never seen on except in pictures and I sure would like to. In fact when I buried my 4020 baling with it this past fall I wish it had had it on it for sure. I would contact Deere and check with them first.

I believe a company called Elwood made this after market kit. I don't know much about them. I saw a 4020 advertised with one in the Green Magazine I received today. Just curious, what is the power source for the FWD--where is it driven from?

Paul, Ellwood is the only one that I had ever seen and believe it was only available on Powershift models for John Deere tractors. It drove off the gear set located behind the transmission planetary unit. Same gear the transmission tow disconnect controlled. The floor board or cab was raised and the top transmission cover was replace with a drive gearbox that stepped the top gear on the output shaft of the Powershift transmission over to the side of transmission case and a driveline was brought forward from it to the front axle. I had a customer wanting to put one on a 4840 at one time years ago but decided not to go that route. It was a cobby looking affair to say the least, but probably had the factory FWA (Front Wheel Assist) beat hands down. Hope this info is correct and is all I really know about them. Dave W.
