I am putting a head gasket on my 730D I got a complete gasket set from JD The head gasket looks the same to me on both sides except for a very small V on one side. Does it matter which way it turns. What could have made the old one blow? It appeard that it hadnt been in there long, because everything came off easy no twisted off bolts including exhaust bolts. There was no visible damage to the gasket, but it was blowing oil out the stack, and bubbling between the block and head, so we tore it down. I just dont understand the problem unless the last guy torqued the head bolts wrong. I have a manual ordered from JD to anwser these kinds of questions, but it has failed to come in a timley manner. Any comments would be appreciated

Will, those gaskets seem to very from year to year & if there is a visible smooth or steel side it would go toward the block. Lacking any other info you should probably have your dealer call Deere to verify what direction [if any] the latest gasket must face.
~While everybody seems to use a little something different on the gaskets, I use a light coat of # 3 Permatex on both sides [excluding the fire rings if it has them]. Make sure to use the lead washers under the head nuts & work the torque up evenly starting at the center & working towards the outside.
~If you can't determine what caused the gasket failure it would be a good idea to have the head surfaced to make sure it if perfectly flat. Look the head studs over very carefully for signs of stretching & past over-torquing. The gasket could have failed due to low initial torque or failure to re-torque after a few heating & cooling cycles, but most I have seen fail for [no apparent reason] do so because a heavy load is placed on the engine before a proper warm up. Go slow & double check everything, you don't want to have to do that job again.....

Smooth side towards block..Look at it REAL CLOSE. Your gasket may have metal eyes around the holes, you may want to check with a mech at you dealer, and ask which way it go on also. Check the archives and type in head gasket, you might find that someone else has asked the same question. Good Luck Ben.
