I have a 1952 B that needs more power. What option would give me the most HP increase? Install a power block or bore my block to .125 over and install a new aluminum piston kit? Would I then need to change carbs or anything else to make it run right. I will use it mostly for plowing. Thanks for your help.

Remove the air filter, the air intake pipes, and for sure the stack that goes out through the top of the hood. You will probably find lots of dirt stuck inside the stack all the way down to the inlet side of the air filter. This crud chokes down the airway. Clean it all out and it will breath better.

Sorry to "differ", but-- I have a 520, and a 1952 "B" ( w/Allied+.180 High Altitude Pistons), installed in 1960, and my "B" will out work that "Puney" 520...and that B has worn out 2 sets of Moldboards..2-14"... I wonder if the 7to1 520 pistons would fit in a "B".??? The B was only 4.65 to 1... More compression will really make a difference.!! Not sure how much I have..I have to open the "petcocks" to start it...42 Years, and still very strong.!!!!

52BMAN..boring the block .125 and shaving the head will take it from 26 to 31 horsepower..the 67 carb will handle this..lynn

How many acres are you plowing? What size plow are you using?

As the others have stated, bigger is better for plowing. But the 1947 & newer B's are a whole lot different than the older B's - longer, taller, 1200 pounds heavier. We used a 1950 B on a 2-16 trailer plow in Iowa. It handled it OK, 3rd gear, performed about the same as an older A (we had a 1940). If your tractor is "gas only" (1 tank), it should perform in stock tune. If you decide to step up the power so that you can run in 4th gear, you may need to increase the cooling system, the heat from the extra power has to go somewhere.

If she doesn't have a water pump -be sure to put one on while you're working on her!

Hey B Man, As the old sayign goes, theres no substitute for Cubic Inches, but a modified block aint cheap and requires the appropriate bigger pistons. Likewise, if you get into stroking (if even possible on that tractor) to add cubic inches, again very costly. Another way to add HP is raising the compression, which might be a little less costly from higher domed type pistons or head modifications. Custom cam grinding can help get a litle more fuel in and exhaust out more efficiently. Theres not much use or need to talk about additional carb work until you run more cubes that requires and can handle added fuel, and, likewise, an after market ignition probably isnt needed unless you run exotic fuels or very high compression. The B is so light, even if you up the HP 25%, two bottom plows at good depth in hard clay, would bust its little rear. Im not sure if youre attached to that B, but for the money necessary to make her be a serious half way small plowing tractor, puchase of an old run of the mill A with 2 14 inch plows behind her might be more cost efective. Bottom line, Cubic Inches (bore, stroke etc) Higher Compression (domed pistons, head work etc), more RPM, more fuel (carb modifications) and a hotter ignition (if needed) is the answer dependign on the money youre willing to spend. Good Luck, Ol John T nordhoff in Indiana

I HAVE TWO B'S AND TWO A'S. I THINK YOU ARE TRYING TO MAKE THE OLD B SOMETHING SHE'S NOT. LEAVE HER LIKE SHE IS AND STEP UP TO LARGER IRON.

To keep the same chassis size a 520 or 530 will walk all over the B. Live hydrualics plus the available option of power steering, proper three point hitch and live pto
