LUKE, you can, but it probably isn't a good idea.
~Deere 2-cylinder steering oil is more like a motor oil than a power steering fluid... Because of the cost of Deere steering oil I have been searching for a reasonably priced alternative [the cost isn't too bad if you only own one or two tractors but gets expensive if you have many].
~I made a homemade viscosity tester & started testing different oils for the same characteristics at different ambient temperatures.... Bottom line is I have drawn a blank so far. The closest I have found so far is Deere HyGARD. My viscosity tester only measures flow times & doesn't assign an actual viscosity number, but the HyGARD, while thinner under all the conditions tested has close to the same viscosity percentage change from 0F to 200F. I thought I was on to something with 10W40 motor oil as it tested real close from about 60F to 180F but went real thick compared to Deere steering fluid under 18F. I was afraid the 10W40 would over tax the pump couplings & seals at ambient below 30F. The other side of the coin is the HyGARD, it is thinner than Deere steering fluid,& gets even thinner as the working temperature increases. ~My fluid recommendation for your power steering system is to use Deere 2-cylinder steering oil if possible & use HyGARD as a second choice if the steering isn't worked too hard so the working temperature is kept low. In cold weather or winter use only, HyGARD is a good choice. I still use HyGARD in any system with problems that I am likely to drain the fluid many times or in the leakers until I get a chance to repair them. I always use Deere fluid in overhauled units or good tractors that don't leak & will be kept.....
