Looking at buying a John Deere 50. Starts great. Idles excellent. Good power when putting it under load with the brakes. More smoke when you rev the engine up and down. Engine seems to be fine - no noise. Smokes out the exhaust. A slight amount of oil running back down the muffler on to the exhaust pipe. This tractor sat for 2 - 3 years and was not run. Could the oil rings be stuck? If so will they get better? Can they be assisted in getting better?

Andy, to answer your basic question, yes the rings could well be carboned up and stuck from sitting so long in the same place. If it were mine, I would change the oil and filter, service the air cleaner, and then install 10W30 oil with at least 2 quarts of Rislone, and use it hot hard and long as much as possible under a good load to try and clean and free things up. Then, change oil again but no additive this time, and just use her a while and see what happens. Good luck, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

better add $250 to your $850 purchase for rings/gaskets/bearings. You'll need to probably remove that loader to do the overhaul. Those loaders are so so, becareful with them, caused a lot of rollovers on tricycle tractors. By the way did you find have power steering?

Andy, it could be as simple as water in the air cleaner causing the oil level to be too high. It could also be stuck piston rings. There is also the chance it has pitted cylinder walls from water entering the cylinders & sitting, worn out rings, worn cylinder walls or other internal engine problems. ~If it is just stuck rings there is a good chance you can free them up with some heating & cooling cycles, or just putting the tractor to work. ~If you are looking at buying the tractor & don't personally know the seller always assume the worst until proven different.
