Why does the nut on the inside of the magneto keep coming off. The one that holds the spring loaded dogs in place.

Jr, After the nut is tightened and is where I want it to stay, I take a center punch and punch the threads at the nut bolt interface to keep the nut from moving. Damaging the nut/thread is small and the nut doesn't move. Easy

Jr, different mags used different types of nuts, but not knowing what you have and just speaking generally, I have best luck with those very thin flat lock washers (not the regular thick spring apart types) and add loctite if the problem persists. Good luck , Ol John T

Jr, now that we know the magneto type we can make a repair suggestion. ~On the Wico C, that special impulse drive cup retaining nut is supposed to be a tight friction fit. Most aren't after a few removals. ~First, make sure the proper thickness of drive spring spacers & drive cup washers are installed so the cup doesn't bind when the nut is tightened. Then install all the impulse parts & wind the spring, then clean the rotor threads & retaining nut inner threads with alcohol or lacquer thinner & put a dot of 262 LocTite on the rotor threads, [caution; don't use too much, if it runs into the impulse you will have a problem], then place a little grease on the nut shoulder that rides in the cup hole] & install the nut [don't use any washer or other locking aid or the cup will bind], then tighten the nut & make sure the impulse works & the cup doesn't bind. When assembled, set the mag with the impulse nut facing down for an hour or so to make sure any LocTite doesn't run into the impulse. If done correctly the nut will then stay tight.
