I am finally putting my D back together. I cannot remember if there are lock washers under the manifold nuts.

Scott, Ive never had much luck with soft steel lock washers in that high of a heat situation (I use stainless where I can if I can find them). It seems they grow brittle and just break and have no locking capacity. Its my opinion they were not used at the factory, based strictly on ones Ive seen torn down that looked original and had none. I just give them some re torques after a few warm ups. A good smooth planed surface on the manifold seems more important than whether lock washers are used or not. Ol John T

Scott, that's a good question. The parts manual doesn't show any lock washers & by looking at some of my archive pictures it could go either way. I have some good early pictures that don't seem to show them & some other pictures of supposedly originals that have lock washers. Due to the good possibility that most if not all the original tractors have had the head off at least once since new it will be hard to tell what was correct at delivery....

found that the JD dealer had some thicker washer(don't use lock washer-breakage and torque problems).
