Hello. I am working on a 36 John Deere B. I have a tooth off of a gear on the top shaft that engages for second gear. I was wondering how to get the shifting fork(s) shaft removed....or could I leave that there and slide the top shaft with the gears on it enough to one side to drop the gears down to get them off the shifting forks? If I do have to remove the shifting shaft which side does it go out? I have the small cover off the gear shaft on the flywheel side and the set screw out of the shifting shaft but I am wondering if there is something behind the large cover on the clutch side of the tractor that is inhibiting me from moving shafts to the flywheel side? I see the castle nut on the gear shaft on the flywheel side but that is all. I would hate to take all that stuff off and then find out I did not have to. Please help. Thank you.

Ryan

Ryan, you might try removing the sliding gear shaft L/H bearing outer retaining snap ring & trying to slide the sliding gear shaft [bearing & all] to the left just enough to sneak that 2nd sliding gear out of the shift fork. If it won't come out that way you will probably have to pull the shift rail to left far enough to get the gear out.

Ryan,

I just got a 38 B back together. I ended up stripping the entire case and removing the axle housing since I had about 4 bad gears including 1 on the differential. If you just need to remove the sliding shaft, I think you are in luck.

The large gear on the right side of the sliding shaft has a stub shaft built into it. The first reduction gear goes on that shaft under the cover on the right side. This gear has to be in place first, before the sliding shaft goes in. On the right side of your sliding shaft, there is a bearing which has a slip fit into the large gear. As you move the whole shaft to the left, the bearing will have to come out of the large gear. If you can get the sliding shaft to move left enough to clear the main case with the bearing on the left side of the shaft, remove the bearing. The entire shaft can then be removed from the top.

Hope this helps you.
