I had a guy ask me today if I knew why there is a differance in the governor reaction time between tractors (2 cyl diesels). I replied linkage adjustment, wear of links, pins etc. all could affect it. He said the ones he was comparing were similar in those respects. One holds within 50 rpm when he started to pull it, another one drops 200 rpm before holding. I said I am kinda new to this site but I would post the question as you guys are fantastic. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Dave, are the diesels the same model & approximately the same serial number range? There were some governor changes in the 2-cylinder diesels as they evolved.
~The difference in governor reaction time could be caused by anything from engine mechanical differences [a weak engine will respond slower], to restricted air cleaner in one, to weaker fuel injector pumps or nozzle pattern differences in one, to worn governor pivots or internal levers [the 2- cyl diesel has a complex governor linkage system], to different pump sizes [the later tractors used bigger pumps], to incorrect or different governor control spring pressures, to linkage setting differences, or some mixture of all of the above. Even rear tire size & engine temperature could have an effect...

Thanks for the replies. The one that responds quick I know is one of the later 720s as it was his own. The other was a friend of his and I don't know the year of that one. He did some custom work on the side and worked for a JD dealer full time as their pickup and delivery man. Unfortunatly he had a stroke a couple years ago and had to sell his. He comes over 3 or 4 times a week to visit. I repair older tractors as a side job because I enjoy it. I also work for one of the big three, in the lift truck repair shop. Thanks again.

I have a 70D and pulling does very well. Barks like nuts and the needle doesn't go down. Gov is very quick. Pulling very good size loads. On l.p.t.o. she drops faster than you can count! I use a different tractor for pto! But boy can she pull!!!!!
