I read this site everyday and learn so much from all you guys, thanks a lot.
I just got a 1947 G John deere. I understand that the 47 G with ser #'s between 23000 & 26000 had a pan seat and that the 47 from that point had a box style seat. What I get is mind should have a pan -type seat and it does not. What I need to know what kind of pan seat it had and how many holes it should have? Thanks guys and keep up the good work.

I have one of these 47 G's also- #24362. Someone ginned up a battery box for it and it wasn't till after I bought it I learned it should have the pan seat- I'm still looking for one of those. I heard it should be a nine hole but I'm not sure where to find that out for sure. Another question- Do either of yours have the split front pedestal? According to the parts book, the split front ped was avail from SN 13000 and up. I've got a split pedestal to put one mine so I can switch it to a wide front, which I plan to do. I dont' have any of the original battery bracket stuff, either, to put the battery in front of the valve cover like it was originally.

gs--don't get rid of your one piece pedestal until you're sure you like that wide front set up.
I've got a GW and while the wide front has some advantages it is basically a clumsy, gawlky, heavy tractor with that heavy wide front stuck out there in front. If the front axle was back about a foot, it would be a lot nicer tractor to drive and the balance would be a lot better too. JMHO Oh, I've got a narrow front roll-o-matic I ran on it while I was fixin' up the wide front, and I'm thinkin' about puttin' it back on.

Oh, I'll keep the original one piece pedestal for it, just in case. I just prefer the look and feel of the wide front, plus the rarity and value enhancement. I used a wide front 60 with my dad for many years,(he still uses it every day) and have put one on a B I'm still in the process of restoring that has been handed down for 4 generations. Just my own preference, I guess, plus the stability and I think the steering wheel turns easier with the wide front.

Tom, Deere started building bench seats July 1, 1947 at ser#26000. Previous to that the pan seat was used on the G and GM. Deere built 2235 G's in 1947. I have ser#24450 with a pan seat. Mine doesn't have the orginal seat it's a five hole I think it should have nine hole. If you want a picture I'll be glad to send you one, I havn't started working on it yet so it still looks pretty rough. John

John-yes send me a picture of your 47 G. The ser# on mind is 24465, kind of close to yours. Thanks for the inf on the seat, mind has been changed over to a box seat that's why I did not know for sure how many holes were in the right pan seat.
