I am rebuilding my G and have a few questions about the shimming that you have to do to get the right clearances on the gears. Do I put the end cap on the governor right after I bolt it on the tractor? How do you know how many shims to use? When I put the fanshaft in I shim it so that there is a little play in the fan right? Thanks for any help.

Brandon, is the governor still off the tractor, or is it bolted back on? If you are lost on the shim thickness & don't have the original thickness to start from you will have to remove the governor to set the "heel" position & then the backlash. [the heel is the back side of the fan gear teeth & when set properly the back surface of the teeth & gears will be even]. The fan shaft will have to be bolted in the governor & the governor will have to be off the tractor & upside down to see & feel the gear heel match up.
~If you have the old shim thickness, start with that then set the heel position to be even, then very the governor cover & fan shaft shims to get the correct backlash & still maintain the even heel match up. If there is noticeable wear on the fan gears don't set the backlash too tight probably about .006".
