The $2500 figure is about right and there have been several on EBAY in the last year or so at that price. If you are going to use it as a utility tractor, The "U" is more practical as it is longer and lower and much more stable on uneven ground. Also a "U" is better if you put a loader on it. I have a loader on a 420U and even though it doesn't have power steering, it is ok to steer unless the bucket is full of dirt (I have a 6 foot snow bucket on it).

The Antique American Tractor and Crawler Value Guide by Terry Dean and Larry L. Swenson gives a range of values for the 40S and 40U (both gasoline). The low end value is $600.00 (a tractor right on the edge of being a parts tractor) and the high end value is $6500.00 ("next to new", restored). They list the middle range value at $2500.00 (they use a five level rating system). This book is available through Green Magazine, Two-Cylinder, or your local bookstore.
