did John Deere put the model # of the tractor a tach was installed in on the tach itself? There is a nice 620 on ebay with "1040 hrs." on the tach (which doesn't really mean anything on these old JD's that have changed owners over the years), but the ad states it's been with the seller for "20-25" yrs. What I'm getting at is if you look at the tach pic next to the 'John Deere' it has a dash then '70d'.. does this mean it was originally installed on a '70 diesel? I've never really noticed this before until now, anyone out there know the answer?

I've got one on my late (1955) 60 and it shows a "60" on it to designate the model number.

Interesting... I'm glad you noticed it because I never had. My meter just happened to be sitting a few feet from me

It too has a "70d" marking, my JD 70D serial number is 7030914.

Just Curious, not all the Deere speed hour meters have the model markings on them. I don't have a 70D with a speed hour meter here right now but my 70 gas with speed hour meter says 70 on the meter face [in the same place as your picture]. Most of the later Deer speed hour meters just say John Deere in that position & have the part number just above the needle. I'm not even sure the RPM readings are the same, I stuck a 520 gas [AB 5134R] speed hour meter on my 720D & the RPM's were way off.

The 70d does refer to the model the the tach is supposed to fit (70 Diesel). The RPM's should be accurate, But the MPH speeds for the different gears will be all wrong. Mike
