4020 Blow-By (sorry, long story)

I've got a high-houred, early serial numbered 4020 that I'm using for field work. It runs pretty well, and everything works on it, but it seemed to be lacking power, it was blowing some white smoke and a lot of blow-by, and I found some coolant in the oil last summer. I decided to pull the head off as a winter project and have a look-see.

The muffler is too high for my garage, so I had to take it off first, but it was rusted pretty good to the manifold. I removed the manifold and found that only one cylinder was producing all the white smoke, and as well, there was a pretty good deposit of thick black gunk around the same exhaust port. I've taken the head off and had a quick look at the valves and such, and really can't find anything out of the ordinary. Injectors look OK, but I'll need to get them tested. The head gasket came apart while I lifted the head off, so there weren't any clues there. One thing of interest is that I found remnants of diamond shaped score marks in a couple of the cylinders. Obviously from the last rebuild - but I'm surprised to see them still there, and on only part of the sleeve. And stupidly, I forgot to do a compression test before I lifted the head. Now I'm blind.

Anyway, what to do next? I could take the head to a machine shop, but I'd rather not spend the money if I don't have to. I don't even know if it's bad or not. How do I find the crack where the coolant leak is? And what's with the hone marks in the cylinders? Did somebody just hone them out and not replace the rings? How do I check clearances between the valve stems and the guides?

Thanks guys. Advice on where to go next?

Alan

The water is probably leaking from the O rings
around the sleeves, blowby comes usually from
bad rings you can't see by just taking the head off.You could do a pach job,but might have
to do it again soon, the only way to fix it right
is to install new sleeves and pistons, have the
head checked, probably needs valves or guides,
and check bearings, sometimes they don't need to
be replaced.

Those diamond-shaped score marks your referring to are probably the hone marks from the last time the sleeves were reconditioned or replaced. A cross-hatch patter of extremely fine scratches is necessary for the rings to seat in properly, as the scratches help retain the oil film. It's not uncommon to still be able to see those marks after thousands of hours op operation, especially in low load and low thrust areas of the cylinder bore.

I would send the head out for a valve job and check for cracks. You can drop in just one sleeve and piston and get away with it if your sure thats the bad one. I would look at some of the bearings and plastigage them. On final assembly of any bearings you take apart use new bolts. I have gotten out cheap by replacing one scored cylinder on a couple
of jobs. When the oil pan is off fill the block with liquid and look at the bottom of the sleeves
for a o-ring leak. Gasoline will find a hole that water won't.

The water can get into the oil difrent ways. Through the orings at the bottom of sleeve, through the sleeve, head gasket,or head also a bad block. How many hrs on engine? Look to see if there are alot of black spots on the hood. Look at the head and pistons for piting. That should give a clue if the water leak is high or low.

I don't see any pitting at all on the head or on the pistons. Some tan coloured deposits, but that's about it.

There are 9,000 hours on the tractor, but I don't know when any rebuilds were done.

Thanks,

Alan

If it looks that cleen then the orings at the bottom are leaking. Pull the pan and see if there is any water leaking around the sleeves. To bad the head is off then you could have put pressure on it. Fill the block with water let stand and chech later if it is leaking on the inside or outside of sleeve.

Thanks, everyone.

The votes are in, and the sleeve o-rings win.

Wallpapering will just have to wait!!!
