The only thing I've heard that could be sillier is the guy suggesting that we all buy new connecting rods because ours might be bent or twisted. That one is so obviously over the top that it doesn't deserve further disscussion. But then there is you two - while I'm sure you meant well and intended to inform, you are way off base for this group. For example, while it's all well and good to shim up a valve spring to compensate for valve grinding - in this case that's all one can do. We have no specs for installed spring height so we can only make up for what we grind down. Say .100"? Say 4% total pressure? I'm being very generous on both sides of those specs to make my point, BTW. That equals 1.5 lbs or so - It's laughable to suggest that we even need to concern ourselves with a gain or loss of 1.5 lbs of spring pressure....And always much more bother than it's worth - it's a bother to even have to type this up!! It's still laughable to do it on a standard V8 - it's only racing engines that need it in the first place, and this is _NOT_ a racing fourm. I can only assume the worst - that you yourself have never worked the numbers nor shimmed a spring in your life, yet you espouse the benifits of it like it was manna from heaven..... As to springs getting tired, that belongs only to a special type of spring that is built with the highest quality steel using too small a diameter wire (for desired pressure) due to constrants of the particular V8 head design that it is going to be used on. In other words, no room for bigger wire. These springs will lose %5 of their installed pressure over time, but that's it - they level off at that point and go no further down in pressure _EVER_. If you are running in the %5 where you need it - then you need to replace these RACING springs often, which would be above 5,000 RPM at least, as stock springs will get you that high if you know what you are doing. The only reason to be concerned with spring pressure in this context is valve float due to high RPMs - and that discussion does not apply to the chuffin' stump pullers in here!! Go away and stick your head in a Hot Rod Magazine and keep your Hot Rod advice to yourself if you can't seperate the 'Mojo' of that mystical garbage from the real world where the rest of us live. I've been overhauling engines from go-carts to Bulldozers and back for 30 years and I've _NEVER_ replaced a valve spring. Not that it's against my Religon or anything like that, but I've never needed to as they just _DON'T_ wear out, go limp, or lose their mystical hoodoo voodoo as Hot Rod Magazine would have you believe (ehh...they do advertise outfits that sell springs$$$$, I'll bet that hoodoo goes over real good with their advertisers, huh?)(Read - self serving cult where the members are volunteers and spout the party line as often as possible). If %2 of valve springs were or went bad, then I would be up to my knees in them and so would every shop in the nation. You would have had one or two go bad in _YOUR_ car at some point too. That just hasn't happened has it? So where the heck _are_ all these weak/tired valve springs you talk about anyway? I know it isn't much nor does it even need to be, but the 30(?) pounds of 'oomph' that JD put in my springs is still there 50 years later and _will_ be there in 50 more. Provided that they don't plain rust away to nothing before then.
