I pulled the pump off my 720 LP yesturday. I had to remove the 2 radiator bolts and slid it ahead. I left the water pipes on. They moved enough in the o-rings to get the radiator ahead enough to get the pump out. I did have to make a notch in the fan shaft tube that sticks out past the casting to get the last 1/4" of the pump shaft out. This was done on 2 other 620's that I have fixed and they never bothered. The 2 620's, and a 720 diesel that I fixed had the 2 seals that you guys talk about but none of them had a spacer washer. I did the power trol pump on the 720 diesel and was going to get the seals from JD dealer and he said I also needed the $9 spacer. Since it didn't have it in originally I thought I could get by without it. The 620 pumps have been working for 5 or 6 years and there has been no problem with leaks. Any thoughts on the spacer?

Mel, the last ones we did, we did not have the spacer and installed without it. The purpose of it is most likely so if you have to install two separate seals (as you do now), it puts both them at the right place, the same as if you had the original double longer one, plus adds some strength. If I was doing it now and had the spacer, however, I would definitely go ahead in use it. I alwyas polish the shaft where the seals contact it. I went ahead and installed new wiper vanes in the pedestal and new half moom keys in teh gears. Good Luck, Ol John T Nordhoff

Mel, we are in the same boat. How were your splines on your shaft. Mel the one I am working didn't have a spacer washer in it. The seal was a thin tpye and it just had one. I going to do like Clooney said, and put 2 seals front and back. I going to put the spacer in too. But I have fine a used fan shaft too. A new pump shaft is $134, at my dealer. I would like to fine both shaft's used. Good luck on your pump.

Mel, not exactly sure why that washer is used between the steering pump seals & power-trol pump seals. The usual reason for using a washer behind a seal is so the seal isn't damaged on shaft installation, but not sure that would pertain to this situation. My best guess [& this is only a guess] is that washer is used to add stiffness & possibly higher retention ability to the thin & rather cheap seals Deere is supplying now. I always install that washer because there is no way I want to have to do the job again any sooner than I have to.

If the spacer is there just to make the seals more ridgit, why wouldn't they reguire one for the front seals as well? They are the same seal. Not to argue a point but just curious.

Mel, the front just goes out to the fan (hydraulic fluid inside) while the rear seals oil/fluid from either direction. John T

Mel, the front seals face the same direction & don't go back to back like the rears. I'm not sure there is enough room for that washer in the front anyhow. Deere does call it a spacer so maybe it has to do with keeping the seal lips separated when they are used back to back. The same seal set up using that spacer washer is used for the diesel power-trol pump. That washer is a tight [drive in tight] fit in the seal bore so it also adds some retention. That seal spacer has been called out for the 520 for quite a while now & is part of the subbed seal package for the other P/S pumps. Not all Deere dealers know about that R-21720R washer & won't furnish it unless asked for.
