just wondering how far I need to slide the fly wheel in on the shaft? if I go any further the starter will need a gsaket.

I like to keep my end-play Under .005" otherwise, I can hear it pound.... Anyway...be sure it does not exceed .010"..!!

Keith, it goes on as far as it can, minus .005"-.010". The flywheel spacer between the flywheel & L/H main bearing housing is what limits the inward movement of the flywheel [no thrust washer used ] & if the flywheel is hitting the starter you have a problem. Is the flywheel spacer there?, Do you have the correct flywheel for your tractor? Do you have the correct starter on your tractor? Is the flywheel hub, flywheel spacer & or L/H main bearing housing excessively worn? Is the flywheel to spacer drive pin sill there? ~What year & type "B" do you have? What is the flywheel casting number? Where is it contacting the starter?
~When your flywheel is pushed on correctly, the flywheel & crankshaft [as an assembly] should have .005" to .010" end play [that is a very light thunk with almost no perceived movement of the flywheel]. ~Make sure all your parts are there, you have the correct starter & flywheel, the flywheel spacer is there & the flywheel in on within .010" of all the way on. ~Post back & give us the year of your tractor & the casting number on the flywheel & where the flywheel is hitting your starter & maybe we can help you determine what's wrong.....

hey Clooney, Happy New Year I think it's the clutch drive worn and letting the crank move and hit the washer on the starter. at the clutch drive there were burs behind the washer on the crank shaft
1946 b (serial # 186627)I need a new disk, clutch drive thanks for the help

Keith, the clutch drive disk doesn't have anything to do with crankshaft end play. If the clutch drive disk is causing a problem it is because it is worn & pressed on the crank too far, or there is a problem on the flywheel side. ~Is the flywheel is moving too far in or out it is caused by a problem on the flywheel side. ~Exactly where is the flywheel hitting the starter? & is it hitting because the flywheel is moving in too far towards the engine, or too far away from the engine?

I removed the clutch and the clutch drive is worn.
the starter is not the original one. what is hitting is the washer. I think the washer is a little big and hitting the teeth on the fly wheel just a little. This is my first tractor I've worked on and I love it.

never heard of that problem...the only thing I know that would allow the crank to extend out further would be a missing thrust washer...but I don't see how it would be hitting the starter...
