I'll have to check the pressure but need to get a guage first. Also I think I put the seals in wrong the way you described it Clooney.I did use permatex but only on the pump side seal. With the felt washer it seems like ther isn't enough room on the shaft unless the inside cup part of each seal can cover or extend over the wwasher. But thisseems the wrong way to install them. Should I just forget the felt seal? Thanks again

Pdl, you probably don't need to check the pressure if those seals are in backwards. If the seals aren't installed with the lips pointing away from each other [one next to engine pointing towards engine & one deepest in the seal bore pointed towards the pump] you have found your leak. Those seals MUST go back to back with the felt pressed between them. I wouldn't leave the felt out, but if it is too thick it can probably be thinned down with a razor blade. I put a light coat of sealer in the seal bore where the inner seal goes using a long Q-tip with sealer on it [if the sealer is put on the seal rim it gets scraped off before is gets driven all the way down the bore]. I usually put a little sealer in the bore where the first seal goes, then install the first seal [lip towards the pump] then install the pump gear & re-assemble the pump, then put a couple of drops of engine oil on the felt & install the felt, then put a little sealer on the engine side seal [lip facing away from the pump] & drive it in until flush with the pump body using a washer & deep socket. That way you don't have to force the gear through the tight felt.

It looks like you're up early today. Sounds like I do have it all bassackwards. I'm going to put a new spring and ball in today also while I've got it off and apart.I hope to let you know later todayif it all works. Thanks for your advice which has been invaluable to me.
