Hey guys I was wondering if yall could help me on a decision? Im looking at a few tractors. I sold both my 3020 and 2510, and bit the bullet and bought a 1992 2555 with cab and loader, well anyway, I have a some money to spend and am looking at both of these afore mentioned tractors, the 2520 and 4040 both diesel. Well so here it goes, the 2520 is a 72 model diesel, triple remotes, factory roll-guard and canopy, wide front and Syncro-Range, tires are new and the engine has 500 hrs on rebuild, shows 8500 on tac. He wants 8500 for it. Ok on to my second option its a 1980 4040 with cab, has the quadrange 90% tires looks good etc has low hrs. He wants 15,000 for it, runs and starts good as does the 2520. The way I figure, I play my cards right I might be able to get away with both of 'em. I do custome haying in the summer and was needing another tractor or 2 to take some of the load off my 2555 and 200 AC. I am pretty familer with both tractors as my uncle has a 69 2520 and a 4240, so there nothing new to me. I would greatly appriciate yalls opion.

I just happend to see em sitting beside the road the other day and called the old boy about em, he said hes getting out of the business(farming) and needing to sell his equipment. the 2520 looks almost as if it was restored, the shifter has no slop or very little, unlike my old 2510, the steering very tight and resopnsive, he said hes used it all summer long doing hay, and hasnt had a lick of trouble out of it. I really like the New Generation tractors, and have always wanted a 2520, but I was looking along the lines of a 90-100 hp tractor, I've had the 200 for about 10 years and this year it finally quit on me while baleing, developed pin holes in the sleeves, went and borrowed uncles 4240 and fell in love with it on the baler, I could bale a gear faster, and averaged about 10 bales per hour more then with the 200, I really like the 16 spd. in them, makes them a dream to run, its fast down the road too. When the 200 gets back its off to sell block for it as the clutch is all but gone too. I like the 2520, for its size its big on power I think. I didnt mean to offend anyone when I said I might buy both, I dont by any means have a ton of money but, I have been selling hay like crazy and have some extra cash, and needing a tractor. The way I figure if its to help my business the banks should have no problem loaning me the money(Yeah right!) I need a cab as its gets mighty dusty baleing, and hot, talk about hot. Well guys when it comes down to it I have a decision to make one or the other....or....if I can swing it both, but which one would you go for, I have the 200 for baleing and the 2555 for rakeing and other odd jobs....Man I hate decision makeing! Thanks guys, also sorry for gabbing on like I have. You've been great help! I'll let yall know what im gonna do in a day or two.

If you can swing it go for both, two years ago 4040's were bringing $20,000+ in the condition you say, so if you run into problems you'll easily get your money back out of these tractors. chris stanton nebraska

Must not be a full-time farmer - must be a hobbyisst with a regular job to pay the bills. You are in a good situation where you can choose..I'd get both, they will hold their value for sure!

Matt, nope not a hobbiest, but not full time either, we have around 640 acers to tend to but we have dad and a few uncles and cousins to take some of the load, these tractors are to help pay the bills, as most of money comes from my hay, I figured it up one time I do around 1500 acers of hay altogeather so I need a few tractors, one at the house to unload hay as it comes. My neighbor helped me this year for a bit and he bought a new tractor and baler, youd be surprized at how much more you can get done with 2 mowers 2 rakes and 2 balers going!!

Ohhhh..I don't know. I would choose the 2520. It is pretty rare and a sought after tractor, and this one has all of the bells and whistles that it can have. These old "New Generation" tractors are very hard to beat, this probably being the rarest of the bunch. It would be great for any job and probably be more fuel efficient. This price isn't bad at all seeing it has all of the options mentioned, you could probably buy it and then advertise it good and make a few thousand off of it.I'd go with the 2520.

No brainer, the 4040 has more power, better ride, and more bells & whistles with probably better resale value for the dollar. If I remember right, the best weather to bale hay is the hottest day of summer and the days to feed hay are the coldest of winter. I've been around both and would take the 4040 first if I could not have both.

I must be getting old.Let's see,an open station 2520 and a 4040 soundguard with air. This ones a no brainer,I fluff with the 4040 with the air on cold, and let the wife rake with the 2520.Then I borrow my favorite uncles 4240 and his 566 baler turn the air on colder and bale until dark or the dew sets. The next morning after she cleans up breakfast dishes and finishes with calves, she takes the 2555 and gathers bales while I start tedding.I must be dreaming.
Go ahead buy both of them. Now try to find a buyer for the Alice.Sounds good to me anyway.

I'd go for the 4040 since it is all Waterloo built vs. the 2520 with the Dubuque built engine. Just my 2 cents worth.
