Is it wise to use new pistons with old rods on a 300 series JD diesel? The engine is running and does not knock but I plan on overhauling it in the spring w/ new pistons, pins, rings, liners, etc. Should I spring for new rods or are old con rods alright to reuse. Thanks

Allen, don't buy new connecting rods unless it's necessary. I would take them to a machine shop and have them checked for twist, bends and so forth. If they check out okay, have them install and fit new pin bushings and resize the big ends if they need to be. You will also want to use new connecting rod bolts, and you might also consider having the rods machined for the torque-turn bolts if they aren't that style already. I don't know exactly what that entails as far as machining, but your machine shop should if they have Deere engine experience. Deere rod bolts are torque-to-yield and are good for only one full tightening. After that initial tightening, if they are reused they won't maintain adequate clamping force - not good. Those rods are strong enough to last pretty much indefinitely when the engine is properly operated. Deere 300 and 400 series engines have excellent bottom ends, and there's no reason to spend money on something that is still serviceable.

I have rebuilt a 282 IH and used old rods. Dont seam to be any problems with it. I dont know about this peticular motor. I use this tractor everyday. If I was restoring it then I would use new rods without question. My 2 cents
