How do you get the brake drums off so you can check the brake lining?

Paul, you didn't give the year or type "A" you have.
~If the nuts are on the outside use G-MAN's process.
~If there are no nuts to be seen on the outside of the drum & all you see are rivets, then you will have to pull the brake assemblies off the tractor & remove the nuts from the inner end of the shafts & pull the drums, shaft & all.....

I kind of wondered about that, but I wasn't sure how the brake drums were put on older "A"s. Was it just the unstyled tractors that had the internal nuts? That's probably the guy's problem - no external clues as to what holds the drums on.

Once you have the large nut and lockwasher off, you have to get the taper broke loose - as the brake shaft and drum center splines have a taper to them. Wedging something behind the drum and smacking the end of the shaft (leave the nut screwed on the end) with a soft hammer or big hammer and a block of wood might do it. If not, you might need to apply some heat to the drum center. Also keep in mind that you might need to back the linings off, as the drums may be worn and hang up on the linings if they're adjusted out properly. If all this fails, your best bet may be to remove the entire assembly from the tractor so you can work on it more easily. I'm not sure if it will come off with the brake drum on or not, so you'll have to take it slow.
