Anyone out there familiar with rice harvesting as it was done in the 50's? I'm curious to know what JD equipment was used (12A,25 ,30??). I thought maybe that a pull type combine could have been used for harvesting. Or was a binder in common practice? I know once the self propelled combines came out Those were used.

Binders and threshing machines were used in rice harvest until self propelled combines came out. There were a couple of AC pull type combines here when they started growing soybeans but I don't remember any stories about them being used in the wet rice fields. There wasn't a JD dealer close so about all the first self prop combines here were IH and Massey. If you want to hear those stories first hand, come to the Rice Paddy Motel at 5 AM in Gillett AR and talk to 92 year old Mr. Wallace and he can fill you in tomorow! They started building the first rice dryer right after WW II to handle the combine harvested rice. No need to leave the shocks in the field to dry for the threshing machines and let the ducks and geese feed on them.

scottAR,

Thanks for the good explanation of how it was done before SP combines. It's hard to imagine threshing up into the '50s, but I'm sure it was done. I had asked before how it was done before SP combines, but I guess no one read my question.

We threshed oats and wheat up 'til 1946 (everyone else was using combines) up in Central Indiana, and I thought we were hopelessly behind the times.

one of the mid souths best shows takes place in corning ark. latter part of october. threshing rice with a all steel case powered by a rumley steamer, then the rice straw is baled with a stationary baler and the grain is pulled away in a grain wagon, by an origional paint spoker D. john deere, there is also a pto driven case rice binder. one of the nicest "old county fair" atmospheres i've seen in a long time, good food, plenty of shade, live music (local talent)antique car show, well worth the trip for me from jackson tn.
