There was a nice "factory aftermarket kit", sold by John Deere for field installation, AFTER production ceased, which would convert a G to gasoline. They just never sold any of them NEW, equipped to burn gasoline. There was also a plan to develope a diesel version, but it wasn't introduced intil 1954, as a 1955 "70". Likewise with LP fuel.

However, there are at least 3 "G" tractors known to exist that appear to have been built as factory gas-burners---the hoods are only punched for one tank, etc. The Serial Number Registers give no clue about these tractors, but the most likely explanation is that Deere built a very few and put them out on test---it had been done before. The gasoline conversion sets were not available until after production of the "G" had ended. Some have theorized that the above tractors had an "aftermarket" hood of some kind, but that is unlikely in the extreme. It would have been easy enough for Deere to just blank out one hole on the hood when it was being stamped. Probably a story we'll never know for sure.

I agree that it is not simply a rumor. J.R. Hobbs (highly respected JD tractor and equipment expert and constant contributor to Green Magazine) covers the subject in his Styled Letter Series book that is published by Green Magazine. Apparently a few "G"s have been found that were factory-eqipped for burning gasoline, just like was posted above. Had I heard it from Joe Blow at a tractor show, I might not believe it, but coming from J.R., I think it's accurate. Deere also considered building a diesel version of the "G", but it's not known if any prototypes were actually built or if they were tested. That would have been quite a tractor.

I've seen one---unrestored and original. No doubt in my mind that Deere built it. If you don't believe it, fine. Ignorance must be bliss.

Post a name and email address. No can do, right?
If you're going to challenge the knowledge of someone like J.R. Hobbs, at least have the guts to back it up with a name and email address. My advice would be to buy the book and read it for yourself, then call Green Magazine and tell them they're wrong....

The last G was serial no. 64530 built Feb. 19, 1953. It was shipped to Greene, Iowa. There was never a factory gas built. Don't know about gas shutoff.

FarmBoy:

I'm pretty sure the "G" was only ever offered in the "All-Fuel" version.

I just checked the parts book, and the only fuel shut-off provision was the tried and true manual selector valve.
