I have a '51 A without a factory waterpump. I would like to plumb a waterpump into the cooling system. Does someone sell this kit or know of a pump that I could install in the cooling system?

Thanks,

Herb

Herb I have a 1951 A without the pump but I have never used the tractor for much in the way of work. In fact it is a small chore to get it very warm at all without covering the grills. There is a classified ad on this site for a NOS Deere Kit with pump, bottom tank, belt, and everything else needed to do it just like the factory. I don't remember the price but it did not seem too bad. It may be several days back now. But it is probably still there. Good luck with the A!

Herb, have you recently replaced the core? All aftermarket cores use the much smaller tubes than the originals (they use the automotive tubes now) so you have to make sure that you get one of the more costly ones with more tubes if you have a thermosyphon system. We just did on our '48 A, and even with more tubes, we had little or no circulation, was ready to buy tanks and a pump off a waterpump A and switch, when a buddy told me to drain it and try just water...it worked, then he told me to get Prestone or a good brand name coolant instead of the Wally World econo stuff we used...worked like a charm!
Deere offered a retro fit kit for theses tractors after water pump production began, I have seen one whole kit for sale over the years. M&W offered a pump too. Question I have with adding an electric pump which would seem to be the easiest and cheapest way is this: how would you seal the cap? Those big ole holes and caps weren't made for pressure systems. Our '47 B used to over heat, when plowing with the wind, and run fairly cool when running against the wind. We had the dealer put a water pump on it, and the cooling problems went away.
That was years ago, and I can't give you any details, but to confirm that the water pump helped immensely. Have no idea if there's anything available now or not.

I have a 1952 A and unless your going to just work it every day 24-7, I can pull a 3-16 plow in 3rd gear and only get up to 190 to 200 degrees, so i don't think you will need the water pump.
Just my 2 cents

I kind of agree with Chris on this one. Are you working the "A" hard enough to overheat it? I've heard that an "A" will overheat, but you have to work really hard to do it. If you have some other sort of cooling system problem, just adding a water pump may not fix it. If you do want a pump, perhaps the parts off a later "A" with a water pump can be retrofitted to your tractor, rather than jury-rigging some other type of pump onto it.

I know im being nosy but i would like to ask why you are doing this the thermosyphon worked great. I am sure you can find somekind of small 12v pump and plumb in one of the wate pipes. Check with performance auto parts stores.

if you put in a pump, you will need a mechanical thermostat.
