I have a neighbor with a 4430 power shift. sometimes when starting a roll of hay in 1st,then 2nd is ok, but when it gets up to operating temperature, on the shift to 3rd from 2nd, it will stall the tractor unless you snatch it back down to nutral. It doesn't allways do this, sometimes it shifts to 3rd correctly. They said it has been doing this a long time. Does any power shift mechanics happen to know what causes this? Someone else said he used it a few years ago and it was doing the same thing going from 4th to 5th. It has shifted correctly to 5th for me this year.

Thanks in advance; Barney

Thanks for the information, JDOUG, and ET. That gives us somewhere to start.

Thanks again; Barney

While it could be a problem with the shift linkage, I'd be suspect of the shift valves. The shift linkage only moves a long spool valve in the shift valve housing. The spool valve sends pilot oil to several smaller valves that in turn direct the oil the the proper clutch and brake packs. There are also 2 small accumulators in the shift valve housing that store pressure oil and help dampen shift engagments. They are nothing more than a spring loaded piston that slides back and forth in a bore inside the housing. One or more of these pistons could be sticking and cause what your describing. Check your hydraulic filters for any debri etc. The next step would be to have someone (your dealer) check the transmission system and lube pressures as the transmission is shifted between the gears. A drop in lube pressure in certain gears would indicate a leak in a clutch for brake curcuit. Hope this helps

Check the shift linkage for wear and proper ajustment. It sounds like a shift valve is not moving far enough to come out of one gear before
the next gears clutch pack is engauged.
