Found a 50. Not running, sheet metal and mechanically sound. Rubber good, not perfect. What is it worth? Can get it for $800. What would you do?

I got my 50 about 3 months ago (also a 1953 model). Paid $2400 for it. Good paint but in need of tires, exhaust system, radiator core and lots of smaller items. It was running although not well. It's my first JD. I would not trade it for a million bucks. Well... okay for a Million I would trade it, but not a penny less.

If you are good with a wrench and don't mind having to drill out busted exhaust bolts and things of that nature then I'd say go and get it.

Best of luck,
John

It may be a gamble not knowing the tractors internal condition, but my father has bought several 2 cylinder tractors very cheap and found out they only needed a few minor parts along with some TLC, and that the main problem was that the previous owner knew nothing about the tractors and had messed them up so that they wouldn't run. So there are occasionally diamonds in the ruff also with a little tuning.

It is unfortunate that some of the owners of those nice original 50's that some of you have mentioned are for sale do not advertise those tractors on YT Photo Ads.

Sorry-somehow I made a mistake about the purchase price in what I said below; However, I stick by what I said; the $800.00 price makes me a touch suspicious of what you might find when you get into it.

My experience was with a $400 "A", in the condition that this 50 was discribed. I wanted to do the work, to gain experience, but I did NOT recoup my expenses when I sold the tractor. I would have been far ahed, to purchase a complete, running "A".

If this 50 is being purchased, to provide the entertianment value of rebuilding it, plus the satisfaction of having done it, I'd be hard put to find a better model to choose to rebuild.

The parts are smaller, yet available, and the tractor is simple enough to work on. It is very likely that the expenses involved will not cover the resulting "value" it will have when completed, but that may be immaterial to the purchase.

Good point on the entertainmet value. Kinda like my H. I bought it in rough shape. I've got far more invested in it than I could get if I sold it, but, I've had the enjoyment of fixing it up. I had it over 2 years before I even got to drive it.

Check out what JD 70 Jim says below. Like him, I've "been there-done that!" and that's why I say that the greatest lesson I've learned is that you can pay a little more for a lot bettter tractor and come out miles ahead in the end with a lot more left in your checkbook. Now--if this is something you "have the hots for," then nothing any of us say will deter you from getting it-and we all understand that too! Good luck and let us know what you do.
There is one for sale in our area that is in great shape with JD 3 pt. Runs and looks great. It can be had for about $3400.00. Hasn't sold yet and it's been for sale for about two months. If $3400.00 sounds like a lot, review Jim's list below, add it up, add it to the cost of the $1500.00 purchase price, figure how long it will take to get it going and the $3400.00 isn't too far out of line. Hope and pray you don't have to get into a radiator core replacement; expense is enough but manageable but replacement of a radiator core on a JD wasn't exactly one of JD's best jobs of developmental engineering.
PS-I think a JD 50 is a mighty neat tractor.

Radiator core replacement on a 50 is not very difficult - it just takes quite a bit more time.

I bought mine about 9 years ago for $1000 at a consignment auction. Had a couple year old re-paint at that time. Changed plugs and points, adjusted the tappets, and it still runs like a top today.

Go for it. I wouldn't let mine go for anything less then $2,500,000.00, it was my Dad's frist new tractor in 1953.

Buy a 50 for $800

Buy new radiator $250
Buy new muffler $50
Buy new exhaust elbow $75
Buy new gauges $105
Buy new seat $50
Buy new battery $60
Buy paint $80
Buy decals (good ones) $75
Buy gasket set $100
Buy oversize pistons, and rings $500
buy pto shields $125
Repair starter $100
Repair generator $100
Repair water pump $125
Replace points,etc $50
Buy working lights $120
Wiring harness $80

Good thing the tires and rims are OK, huh?

I have watched a half dozen or so, WORKING and intact 50s sell in the past several years. Low price was $1700 and high price was about $2500!

Perhaps this tractor WONT need all of the above.

Does it have Live PTO. Is the tractor a 1953 with the window ( rather than round holes ) type rear wheels which may be cracked. That is the big things that stick out that determine price other than tire and running. $ 800 can provide alot of enjoyment.

seller is leaving a lot of money on the table. Tractor should sell for at least $2500. You better buy before the seller finds out about ebay. There's a 50 carburator on there going for $150.00.

Go for it, especially if it's close by, doesn't require a lot of hauling and you have a place to put it. It will provide you lots more that $800 worth of entertainment.
