I had a new one today with a 1941 A I have owned for about 25 years. This tractor still has the original pistons and bearings, although I put a gas manifold on it years ago. Today I was cutting wood and using the loader to buck brush when a neighbor stopped by, I stopped the tractor while we talked(maybe 10 minutes) and the tried to start it again. It didn't start as it usually does and after a little cranking it ran BACKWARDS. Exhuast coming out of the air cleaner stack sure gets your attention. I shut off the ignition(it has a Genessee electronic in a Delco distributor converted to 12V) and it stopped. It wouldn't start no matter what I did. It didn't appear flooded when I opened the petcocks. After about 45 minutes it popped right off and ran normally. Temperature here in Michigan at the time was about 30F, and it hadn't run long enough to warm up much. What happened? Merry Christmas to all,
Paul

Paul, I haven't ever seen a gas 2-cylinder Deere run backwards. I have seen 2-cylinder diesels run backwards, but not gassers.
~The ignition doesn't really care which way it turns & will spark either direction, probably even have some advance because it is using the back side of the distributor cam. The cam won't be phased correctly but the specs are pretty mild so it might be possible to run backwards. [if it actually did ran backwards] .
~My guess [& this is strictly a guess] is that that one cylinder stopped with both the intake & exhaust valves open, & with a hot muffler you had convection air flow up the muffler that pulled fuel/air from the carb, through the cylinder & into the muffler. Then when you started it a cylinder fired early due to a random or early E.I. pulse & it fired pushing the piston back down the cylinder, then ran backwards for a few revolutions.....OR...You have a fuel shut-off problem & the crankcase is full of fuel with the fuel vapors getting by the rings & using air drawn in through the muffler to make a combustible mixture...OR... you just thought it was running backwards due to exhaust coming out the intake from a stuck open intake valve on one cylinder causing firing in the intake tract. That would make it sound different, run poorly, & give the effect is was running backwards..... .OR..... It was a Christmas miracle..... ...

Clooney,
I,ve ahd them kickback after firing once before TDC, but this time it was 3-4 times, not in a row. Probably once every 4-6 revolutions. I was standing on the ground beside the tractor when I started it and the flywheel was definitely rolling backwards. Before this all happened I thought maybe it was flooded and opened the petcocks, no excess fuel came out. I've been wrenching on these old two cylinder tractors for over 40 years and this is one of the strange ones. The real Chrismas miracle was spending it with my grandson in Brighton, MI but this may be number two.
Thanks, Paul
