720LP Clutch problem

I am in the process of reworking an early model 720LP. The crankshaft had considerable wear and the clutch pulley end spline shaft was in terrible shape so I purchased a new(used) cranks, had it turned, bought a new clutch drive disc, main and rod bearings, seals and put everything back together. I adjusted the clutch, fired up the tractor and found that the clutch kept truning even when the lever was disengaged. I could stop the clutch from turning by pushing the lever forward just a touch but without enguaging the clutch. I put the clutch back together in a hurry(the wife was breathing down my neck to do some chgristmas shopping) nayway so I could have gotten something backwards or I could have gotten something out of line. I plan to tear the clutch back down in a couple of days and was wondering if y'all had any ideas as to what to look for. The flywheel side seems tight and within tolerances as far as end play.

A quick note to say that this tractor hasn't run exactly right since it was purchased several years ago. I would always seem to run on the left cylinder, wouldn't idle very fast and Had very little adjustment in timing with the distributor. While changing the crank I noticed that the last time someone changed the crank and had it turned down they got the crank about three teeth out of time. It seems to run MUCH better now(I haven't run it much though because of the clutch problem.

Thanks again and Merry Christmas

Mike, there are some differences between the early & late 720 clutch, clutch fork stop, & pulley brake adjustments. The short answer is: you probably don't have your pulley brake adjusted tight enough & the clutch inner disk is re-applying before the pulley brake can hold the pulley. Try simply adjusting the pulley brake tighter so the brake holds the pulley with very little rearward movement of the hand lever after dis-engagement. If that doesn't do the trick, post back with your tractor S/N for further [complicated] instructions on fork stop adjustment & or brake stop pin adjustment.
