Several of you helped with good info on the question below, but my buddy must have had an adult beverage or two when he told me the tractor model number so maybe there's a different answer. The correct model is a JD 2640. The pressure plate and disk are splined.

His business is a construction landscaping and he does a lot of work on his back hoes, excavators, bulldozer, 18 wheeler etc, so hes no novice. He has his JD split to replace the clutch and is ready to put it back. Based on his Ford experience, he needs a 2 stage alignment tool but hes been told by the JD folks that there is no such thing. The question is then, if there is no such thing, how do you do it?

Happy holidays to all! Steve.

I you have a wood lathe, take a piece of wood stock, turn a land for the pilot bearing, engine clutch and pto clutch. You can assemble the pressure plate with the PTO clutch installed to get the length mesurements. You don't need any splines on the tool just round to fit the holes. Now install the pressure plate with the PTO disk installed and the engine clutch in the flywheel. Tighten the three bolts in the fingers of the pressure plate tight enough to release both clutch disks. Now install your wood pilot through the disks. With the disks centered back the three bolts off to capture both disks. If you don't have the guage to adjust the fingers, back the three finger nuts off until they are loose, then tighten them finger tight plus two and one half turns and lock them. Method two, assemble the pressure plate with both disks in flywheel tighten the bolts to the flywheel, then tighten the finger nuts until both disks are free. Roll the tractor together while baring the engine over to align the engine clutch splines, and turning the PTO shaft to align the PTO clutch. Work through the round inspection hole and back the fingers off to capture the clutches, then get your two and one half turn adjustment. Method three, align the PTO disk by eye, and align the engine clutch with a pilot shaft. This is the method I use.

After rereading your post, I typed too soon. If your pressure plate is splined, you have independent PTO. What I described above was for what is called continuous PTO, which was an option on the 2640. With independent PTO the splines in the pressure plate are already centered. All you do is center the engine clutch, and roll the tractor together while turning the engine to get both splines to start.

The 2640 does not have a 2 stage clutch.

My 1520 does not have a 2 stage clutch. I did not need an alignment tool.
