Can anyone tell me the proper way to check and set the timing on my 1953 AR ??
I'm still trying to get this machine to run and the only thing I can think of now is to double check the timing. There is a spark and it seems to get fuel so maybe the timing is off a bit.
Thanks for any help

Did you have govenor off or a part. Take mag. or dist. Put slot in flywheel crosswise the slot in the drive coupling should be the same. On some tractors you might have to change it. The gov. turns engine speed. If flywheel slot is up and down so shoud the slot in the drive end.

Wolf, is it hand or electric start and equipped with a magneto or a battery powered coil ignition system? If a Wico X magneto, set the initial static timing such that she just snaps over and fires the mag when the left hand cylinder is at TDC (left hand impulse) on its compresion stroke. Thats for initial static starting and the run timing is adjusted by rotating the mags rear plate, which is usually set around 20 degrees advance. On a distributor, the points would be open on the first high cam lobe for the left hand cylinder at TDC on its power stroke. When I set them by ear, I advance them to where she about stops the popping sound at slow idle, and then retard them to she just starts to pop which is around the 20 to 25 range. However, this is not what I advise lol its how Ive done it with alot of experience, because strictly by ear, its easy to want to set them too far advanced causing kick back tendancies at start up or too hot runing. This is only a ball park setting, but if you have a good blue spark at each plug and fuel, she ought to at least run. Post back with what shes doing or not doing and we will try and get her running. Have you removed the plugs and cranked her over and observed the quality of spark?? Are the plugs clean and not sooty colored or carboned or oiled up??? Are the points (regardless if mag or distributor) clean and not pitted burned or oxidized and gapped properly??? Let us know, Good Luck, Merry Christmas, Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana
