I have a chance to buy a 1968-row crop 5020 or a 1975 4430 w/canopy & syn-8 speed each tractor has about the same rubber and Hrs. I can save $1500 if I go with the 5020. I will use the tractor for some field work and also would like to farm-stock pull-it. Any advice would be appreciated.

I agree with G-Man on most issues. I've farmed with both 5020 and 4430 and one definite plus for the 5020 is the easier ride in the field, probably due to the heavier weight. Also, I think the 5020 is just as manueverable as the 4430, with excellent power steering and brakes. One thing I'm curious about is that there is only $1500 difference in the price. In this part of the country a good 4430 sells for $12,000 - $16,000 but a good 5020 (which are getting hard to find) will usually only bring about $4,000 - $6,000. Good Luck with whichever choice you make.

Don't know much about 5020's , 4430's are pretty good old horses . Quad would be nicer , but from the prices you quoted below , for me I think the 4430 is a better deal . Sometime in the 75 model year around serial## 45,000 there was some trans and final drive updates "improvenents" etc . As for farm stock pulling , again the quad has the advantage but there is more potential with the 4430 than the 5020 . We've been pulling stock with a 4430 Powershift for a number of years , still only 8 speeds and same ratios as the syncro , it's out pulled lots of quads , I've done a little tinkering with it but I still use it for work at 175hp . I sure would like to find a cabless 4430 quad though especially one with a weak or bad engine , been looking for a while but no luck . Around here there is hardly any difference in price between can and not . Jim

Those are two fairly different animals you're talking about there. The 5020 is probably going to be heavier and if the 4430 is in good shape and properly ballasted, it will probably out-work the 5020, if they're both stock. The 4430 has more horsepower per lb of weight, and should have similar horsepower to the 5020. The one advantage the 5020 might have is in lugging power. 5020s came from the factory with a naturally-aspirated 6531 engine, where the 4430 uses a turbocharged 6404 that's a little high-strung and doesn't have a strong torque-curve. Does the 5020 have a 3 pt.?
Most were used for wheatland farming, and many don't have a hitch, which usually hurts the value some. The vast majority of 4430s do have hitches, so I'm assuming the one you're looking at does. The 4430 will also be more manueverable and generally easier and more convenient to operate, so it would be my choice for daily field operation. It all comes down to a matter of personal choice.

Thank's for the comment's as far as price is concerned the 5020 is $7000 4430 is $8500 both tractors are in good shape price is reduced on 4430 because no one around here wants one w-out cab and it doesn't have quad-range. THANKS AND MEERY-CHRISTMAS!
