I have a 966 with a rebuilt Bosch model 100. The tractor flutters sometimes and slobbers when it is idling. The injectors have been tested and they are OK. Someone told me 966's were bad about fluttering and that you just live with it. Can a 1466 pump be used on this? It seems that the rotary model 100 could be the problem and that an inline Bosch on the 1466 possibly could cure it? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I would contact a local reputable diesel shop and get some advice from them. As time goes on, most problems like the one you mention are resolved, especially considering how long that tractor has been out, and a good diesel shop should be able to tell you if they can fix it. There is likely some sort of update or other fix for the pump. Keep in mind that when installing a different style of pump, you're going to need different lines and so forth. I also don't know for sure if the inline pump uses the same bolt pattern, timing gear and so forth as the rotary, so there may be problems in physically attaching it to the engine. If the diesel shop can fix your existing pump or provide you with an exchange unit, that will likely be the cheapest and easiest fix. I also agree that it sounds like your top end is probably okay, you wouldn't get that kind of compression with a broken rocker arm on the intake side, and it wouldn't run worth a darn with a broken rocker arm on either the intake or exhaust, and would probably have some nice noises to boot. The fluttering sounds like a governor problem to me. Good luck with the 966. I spent a lot of time on one, and they'll run and run and run.

Thanks G-Man for the pointers. It's good to know that a 966 can run smoothly all of the time. Jason

It sounds like broken rocker arm.

I did a compression test on the engine and I had between 410-440 lbs on each cylinder. Wouldn't low compression signify a broken rocker arm?

You can lift tappit cover and tae it off with fuel tank in place. I replaced one on a 1066 on the front. That I could get at on the 966 it was in the middle. I think I might have pulled the head. I did not do a compression test on those tractors. Run the tractor and crack one inj line at a time. See if your leak and miss are in the same place.
